E-archiving becomes mandatory for electronic trading information from January 2024

Release of Peppol specifications for Japanese PINT implementation
On 28 October 2022, Japan released Peppol BIS Standard Invoice JP PINT version 1.0. Through joint efforts between Open Peppol and Japan, on 21 July 2023, Peppol released the electronic invoicing standards for Japan.
Pagero becomes an acknowledged Peppol Service Provider in Japan
On 5 August, the Digital Agency of Japan authorized Pagero to offer services to international and domestic businesses operating in the country.
Japan becomes the newest Peppol Authority
The newest Peppol Authority, Japan’s Digital Agency, was established on 1 September 2021, and has since 14 September 2021 officially obtained Authority status.
EIPA releases the first deliverables for introducing Peppol in Japan
Prior to the new Qualified Invoice System implementation in 2023, EIPA (E-Invoice Promotion Association) aims to enable taxpayers to use software that supports issuing and exchanging qualified electronic invoices during the fall of 2022. The Association is a strong advocate for Japan to adopt the Peppol standards.
Japan will open vendor registration for the Qualified Invoice System by fall 2021
Currently, Japan is under the transition from paper and PDF invoices to structured electronic invoices. Since 1 October 2019, the country has a Transitional Invoice Retention System that enforces taxpayers to record general invoice information to claim a Japanese Consumption Tax (JCT) input credit.
Japan considers Peppol as countrywide e-invoicing standard
The newly formed E-Invoice Promotion Association (EIPA) has announced that Peppol is likely to be selected as the standard specifications for electronic invoicing in Japan.
